“Federal Funding Cuts Threaten Services for Survivors in Michigan”

Without critical funding, survivor services in Michigan could vanish — leaving no seat, no support, and no safety for those in crisis.
First Step and agencies across Michigan are facing unprecedented funding cuts due to a 40% drop in federal Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) funds. These dollars, which come from fines and penalties paid by convicted criminals, not tax dollars, make up almost half of First Step’s budget.
Without action, survivors of domestic and sexual violence could lose access to critical support:
- 24/7 crisis helpline and emergency response
- Safe shelter and housing support
- Counseling and support groups for adults and children
- Legal and systems advocacy
We’ve already had to suspend transportation and hoteling for high-risk survivors, and more cuts are likely. Survivors deserve better — and your support can help close the gap.
We cannot let survivors face an empty chair when they need safety and hope.
